Safe Schools Policy

Policy Statement

The Eastern School Board shall establish a Safe and Caring School Team in order to provide safe and caring environments for all its employees and students.

Rationale

The Eastern School Board believes that all students, employees and volunteers within the District have a right to a safe, secure and caring environment and that such environments CAN be created in ALL schools. Such environments develop out of an atmosphere of mutual respect and partnerships between the home, school and community. The key to making every school safe and caring is recognizing that violence can be an outcome of any power imbalance of gender, ability, age, creed, ethnicity, economic status, race and sexual orientation and that everyone has a responsibility and role to play in reducing violence in schools and in the community at large.

Scope

This policy will apply to all students and employees of the Eastern School District. Furthermore, all volunteers who work within the District’s schools, as well as visitors to schools, shall abide by the terms of this policy. The jurisdiction within which this policy will apply includes school/district properties, school buses and district/school sponsored events.

Procedures

The Administrative Regulations for this policy will be reviewed as deemed necessary by the Director of Education or designate in consultation with the Administrative Council and the Regional Administrative Councils.

The Eastern School Board will:

• establish a District Safe and Caring Schools Team with designated responsibilities for ensuring that all schools within the Eastern School District develop Safe School Plans, using the guidelines outlined in the District’s Handbook for the Development of Safe and Caring School Plans;

• pursue meaningful partnerships with various government agencies and community stakeholders for the purpose of promoting the goals and ideals of Safe and Caring Schools

• require that School Councils approve their school’s Safe and Caring School Plan before a copy is submitted to the CEO.
